Summary:

  • 47% of young people report no construction information in career advice.

  • 68% of youth have a positive view of construction careers.

  • 53% interested in a built environment GCSE; 64% of parents support it.

  • CIOB warns government plans could ‘fall flat’ without attracting young talent.

  • Projected need for 251,500 additional workers by 2024.

Construction Career Guidance Lacking

Almost half (47%) of young individuals surveyed reported that they did not receive information about the construction industry during their career advice sessions in education. This revelation has prompted the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) to issue a warning regarding the government's housing and infrastructure plans, stating they could ‘fall flat’ without action taken to attract young talent into the sector.

Positive Perception Yet Limited Awareness

Despite the lack of guidance, 68% of young people aged 16 to 24 expressed a positive view of construction careers, and 31% indicated they would consider working in the field. Moreover, 53% of respondents showed interest in studying a built environment GCSE, and 64% of parents would encourage their children to take this subject if available.

The Need for Change

David Barnes, head of policy and public affairs at CIOB, emphasized the necessity for change to create a competent workforce in the construction industry. He noted that while young people have a favorable view of construction, this does not translate into career choices due to the lack of exposure in educational settings.

A Call for Action

The CIOB advocates for a dedicated Built Environment GCSE to stimulate interest and showcase the diverse roles available, including non-site-based positions and those leveraging modern technology.

This report aligns with National Careers Week and the launch of the Choose Housing Toolkit, aiming to provide resources for social landlords to promote careers in housing.

Workforce Needs

By 2024, it is projected that an additional 251,500 people will be required in the construction workforce to meet expected output goals, with the government's plan to build 1.5 million homes highlighting the urgency for skilled workers.
