Meet the New Heroes: 16 Firefighters Begin Their Journey with Staffordshire Fire and Rescue

Welcoming New Recruits

We have welcomed 16 new wholetime firefighters to our service this month, embarking on an intensive 15-week training programme.

Training Overview

The programme will equip them with the practical and technical skills needed to meet the demands of a modern-day firefighter. Training sessions include:

  • Hose and ladder use
  • Breathing apparatus
  • Hazardous materials
  • Water rescue
  • Working at heights
  • Prevent and protect
  • Road traffic collisions
  • Trauma care

These sessions will be accompanied by multiple assessments to ensure readiness.

Ceremony and Deployment

Upon completion of the course, a special presentation ceremony will be held in the summer, after which the firefighters will be posted to stations across Staffordshire.

Motivations for Joining

When asked about their reasons for joining the Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service, new recruits shared a variety of motivations, including:

  • Being inspired by firefighters in their personal lives
  • A desire to give back to the community
  • Interest in working in search and rescue teams

Notably, three of the recruits have previously served as on-call firefighters.

Insight from Leadership

Learning and Development Station Manager Duncan Cole expressed excitement about welcoming the new recruits. He stated, “This journey will challenge them physically and mentally, but it will develop them in various ways, learning new skills and personal attributes. This will prepare them for one of the most rewarding careers protecting lives while serving our communities within Staffordshire.”
