BBC Bitesize Survey Highlights
In a recent survey conducted by BBC Bitesize, 4,001 teenagers aged 13-16 shared their career aspirations during National Careers Week. The findings reveal that for the second consecutive year, the top career choice among UK teens is Doctor, followed closely by Engineer and Teacher. Notably, Pilot has made its debut in the top 10 this year, while Artist has dropped out.
Preferred Employers
When asked about their ideal employer, the NHS was named the top organization for the second year running, followed by Google and Apple. NASA remains a favorite at number four, with Football Clubs, Government organizations, and self-employment making their first appearances in the top ten.
Confidence and Career Choices
The survey indicates that 85% of teens are confident they will achieve their dream job. Nearly half (47%) prefer attending university post-school, while 25% are interested in apprenticeships, and 17% want careers that don't require a degree or apprenticeship.
Values in Career Choices
Teens highlighted what they value most in their future careers: feeling good about what you do, followed by happiness and money.
Resources for Career Guidance
Helen Foulkes, Head of BBC Education, emphasized the importance of these results for guiding young people. BBC Bitesize offers a variety of resources including a new job quiz, videos, podcasts, and step-by-step guides on crafting CVs and exploring career options. These resources are designed to inspire and assist teens in making informed career choices.
Year-Round Support
The BBC Bitesize Careers section provides resources for ages 11 to 16+, available throughout the year. Furthermore, the Ultimate Guide to GCSE Options has been launched to help students navigate their subject choices and understand potential career paths connected to those choices.
