Dean Coomber, Head of Commercial for Dandara’s South East region, exemplifies the opportunities available for those eager to kickstart a career in property.

What is National Careers Week?

National Careers Week is a week-long celebration focusing on career guidance and free resources in education across the UK. Its aim is to help young people develop awareness and excitement about their future career paths.

Dean Coomber's Journey

Dean began his career at Dandara in 2015 as a Trainee Quantity Surveyor, working on a multi-phased 600-unit development in Royal Tunbridge Wells. His journey saw him progress to an Assistant QS and ultimately to the lead Surveyor on a project in Church View, Tenterden.

Dean shares, “I studied Business Management, specializing in Operations & Project Management at Bournemouth University, and later pursued a Postgraduate Diploma in Commercial Management and Surveying. My undergraduate degree opened my eyes to the diverse opportunities within the housebuilding industry.”

Career Growth at Dandara

After two and a half years as a Project Surveyor, Dean was promoted to Managing Surveyor, where he led a small team. Now, as Head of Commercial, he oversees a six-person team and manages all commercial aspects, including budgeting, financial reporting, cost control, risk management, and contract negotiations to ensure project viability and profitability.

Dean emphasizes, “One of the most fulfilling aspects of my role is witnessing the construction process from start to finish. I appreciate every stage of the construction process and strive to ensure that every team member feels valued.”

The Impact of Housebuilding

A recent report by the HBF revealed that housebuilding in England and Wales generated £53.3 billion in economic output and supported 834,000 jobs, along with 10,000 apprentices, showcasing the significant social and economic benefits of the industry.

Advice for Aspiring Professionals

Dean advises anyone considering a career in housebuilding: “The industry is extremely fast-paced. Roles like Quantity Surveying, Project Management, and other commercial positions offer exciting opportunities for young people.” He encourages exploring apprenticeship schemes at Dandara that provide hands-on experience while studying.
