Many young people have a clear vision of their career aspirations, but for others, the path is less defined. It's crucial to recognize that support and guidance are readily available to help you make informed decisions.
Take the Skills Assessment
Deciding what to do after school is a significant choice. The National Careers Service offers an online skills assessment designed to assist you in identifying your next steps. This assessment will help you:
- Discover what motivates you
- Identify careers that interest or disinterest you
- Understand what you can achieve with your current skills
The assessment consists of 40 multiple choice questions and takes about 5 to 10 minutes to complete. Based on your responses, it will provide you with career suggestions to explore further.
Explore Career Options
Once you have identified potential job sectors, you can delve deeper into various career paths. This includes information about the qualifications required and the recommended courses to pursue.
Cllr David Lonergan, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, emphasizes the importance of this process: "It can be a daunting time when you need to think about your next steps when you leave school. While many have a clear career path in mind, the vast array of choices can make it challenging to decide. Taking a skills assessment can help you match your interests and skills to different careers, narrowing down your options."
Seek Support
Don't hesitate to reach out to your careers advisor at school for additional help and support. After completing the assessment, discuss your findings with friends, family, or your advisor to better understand your options.
