A Response to the Perception of Shelf Stacking
I was disappointed with the tone of an article discussing senior TV producers taking on shelf-stacking jobs amidst an industry crisis. The article suggests that these positions are somehow 'lesser'.
While the decline in wages for executives in creative industries is real, the comparison between their previous roles and current jobs is a gross act of pretension. Many individuals, including my own mother, have built careers in high street shops to support their families. This work is dignified and important, and not long ago was considered essential.
A Personal Perspective
In response to the same sentiment, I, an engineering graduate with extensive research experience, am currently working in retail without complaints. The frustration of not landing a desired job is understandable, but taking available work is not a scandal. Retail work requires honesty and hard effort. It’s disappointing to see such work dismissed as humiliating by a respected publication. I find myself resentful of a metropolitan elite that perpetuates this narrative.
