Practical Strategies and Research-Backed Insights

This free resource highlights practical strategies grounded in the latest research. Rebecca Healy, Careers Inspiration Manager at EngineeringUK, stated: “The guide acts as the latest digest of current research about what works to increase young people’s awareness and inspiration about STEM careers, saves time and helps career leads bring to life the dynamic world of STEM.”

The Importance of STEM Careers

Engineering and technology careers span every sector, from sport to space, and play a crucial role in improving sustainability and achieving net zero goals. The demand for engineers is high at all levels, from apprentices to postgraduates.

Developed in collaboration with EUK Education’s Careers Working Group, the guide aligns with the Gatsby Benchmarks (in England) and the Careers Education Standard (in Scotland), ensuring that career planning is both effective and comprehensive.

Addressing Skills Shortages

With around 6.3 million people employed in the sector, there is a pressing need to make more young people aware of opportunities and different entry routes, especially as employers report skills shortages. Currently, women make up only 16% of the UK engineering and technology workforce.

Séan Harris, Deputy Director General and Director of Membership at the Institution of Civil Engineers, emphasized the vital role of career leads and educators in inspiring young people about the diverse opportunities in engineering, especially in tackling global challenges like carbon net zero.

The guide aims to provide actionable guidance to help elevate STEM careers within school curriculums and broader careers education programs.
