On the first lap of the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, at Turn 4, Yuki Tsunoda and Pierre Gasly made race-ending contact. Their close relationship has been well-documented, making this incident particularly painful. Here's how both drivers reacted to their lap 1 shunt.
Tsunoda's Career on the Line
Tsunoda was aiming for his second points haul for Red Bull after a shaky start to his season. He reflected on the crash's impact, emphasizing the pressure of his high-profile seat and the uncertainty surrounding his future in F1, as his contract with Red Bull expires at the end of the year.
"It's painful to hit anyone in the first lap. It's not ideal. We are fighting for our careers in Formula 1, trying to have success, so the real pain is the DNF," Tsunoda expressed during a media briefing in Jeddah, downplaying the collision with Gasly.
Gasly's Perspective on the Incident
For Pierre Gasly, the incident was a racing mishap. He acknowledged the respect between him and Tsunoda, stating,
"I know his intentions. I know there's huge respect between Yuki and myself so I know he didn't mean anything bad. It's more sort of judgment and first lap, cold tyres etc."
Gasly pointed out that it was a missed opportunity for both drivers, as they had confidence in their car's performance heading into the race.
